Editor’s opinion: MSI is giving away a 500GB hard drive with the purchase of a new entry-level PC kit. The marketing strategy may seem attractive at first glance, but don’t be fooled. The freebie isn’t worth much and arguably has no place in a modern gaming PC.
MSI Gaming USA recently announced the deal on X. For a limited time, barebones PC buyers can get a free 500GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda 2.5-inch hard drive with their purchase. Amazon is offering the same drive for $100. $24.99So we’re not exactly looking at a high-value item. Anyway, free is free, right?
While there’s nothing wrong with putting the Seagate hard drive in your new computer as a backup or storage drive, the last thing you want to do is use it as your primary operating system drive. Traditional hard drives are much slower than flash-based solid-state drives. Running your operating system on a hard drive is like going back in time, and performance will suffer in every way.

For your main unit, a Solid State Drive That should be your only consideration. Prices have dropped significantly since they first came on the scene. For example, you can get a 512GB SATA SSD from a name brand manufacturer for under $30. Add another $10 and you can take home an M.2 drive that will far outperform the SATA drive.
For MSI Starter KitsThere are currently five to choose from, with prices ranging from $197.99 to $339.99.
The entry-level kit includes a B650M Pro-VDH WiFi motherboard, a MAG Force 112R mid-tower chassis, and a MAG A650N 650-watt power supply. It’s not a bad deal for the price, especially if you’re building on a budget. The top-tier package comes with a Z790 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard, a Gungnir 210R chassis, and an 850-watt MAG A850GL PSU.
MSI’s free HDD offer is valid for an undisclosed limited time, so if you’re interested, it’s probably best to take advantage of it as soon as possible.
