Verizon is currently experiencing a major outage that is affecting many customers across the United States, including iPhone users. Affected users may not be able to make or receive phone calls, send or receive text messages, or use cellular data.
As a result of the network outage, many affected iPhone users see “SOS” in their device’s status bar. in a supporting documentApple says that an iPhone displays “SOS” when the device is not connected to a network, but it should still be possible to make emergency calls in the US, Australia and Canada.
in a statementVerizon said it is “aware of an issue affecting service for some customers” and is working to identify and implement a solution.
With any iPhone 14 model or later, you can use Apple’s handy tool Emergency SOS function via satellite to text emergency services when you are in a supported area in the US that lacks cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
We’ll update this story when Verizon says the outage has been resolved.
