With October just around the corner, Apple is preparing for the big launch of Apple IntelligenceWe already know that it requires a good 8GB of RAM to run, but now we’ve learned that it needs quite a bit of storage, too.
According to a Support documentIn the article “Introducing Apple Intelligence on iPhone,” any iPhone running Apple Intelligence on iOS 18.1 or later will need 4GB of storage dedicated to the feature. That effectively reduces the base-level storage from 128GB to 124GB for the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro, and from 256GB to 252GB on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
A footnote on the page states that “storage requirements for Apple Intelligence on-device models will increase as more features are rolled out.” Presumably, that means unannounced features coming in iOS 19 and later, but it could mean that iOS 18 features coming next year, including next-generation Siri, might require more.
It is not clear what the 4GB of space is needed for or why a similar document The same requirement is not mentioned for the iPad. For the Mac, it is not mentioned either, except to say that an M1 or later processor is required.
Apple Intelligence will roll out in stages starting with iOS 18.1 next month. The first round of features will offer writing tools including text summaries and notifications, “a more capable and conversational Siri,” and better photo search. This will be followed by image creation features including Genmoji and the Image Playground, as well as context-aware Siri and ChatGPT integration.
