It’s been over a week since Hispanic Heritage Month began, which started on September 15 and continues through October 15. This month is an annual celebration in the United States that honors the contributions, culture, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be gathering with fellow Clouders to reflect on and celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino communities here in the U.S. and around the world.
At its core, this month is about sharing what makes each of us unique and learning about the cultural differences in these communities to better understand the experiences that unite us all.
It’s set to be a busy month, so let’s dive into what we have planned for an exciting month of learning, growing, and giving back.
A month full of action and learning
Cloudera’s calendar is filled with exciting activities to help not only raise awareness about the Hispanic and Latino experience and history, but also to give back and impact the next generation.
At our most recent event, Cloudera volunteers helped Hispanic and Latino students from under-resourced schools improve their LinkedIn profiles. We spent time offering constructive feedback to build on what they already had and align them with professional standards. Our goal was to enable these students to find more secure employment opportunities, build a strong professional brand, and learn from what other Latinos and Hispanic Americans are doing, both in their careers and through networking environments like LinkedIn.
Looking ahead, the rest of the month is also packed with fun and informative activities. On October 8, we will be hosting a Hispanic Heritage Month workshop and a trivia event on Hispanic and Latin American history and culture. Both offer a great opportunity for attendees to celebrate the diverse histories, languages, and heritages of Hispanic and Latin cultures in the U.S. and Latin America. During the trivia, we will be testing our knowledge on everything from famous Hispanic and Latin figures to historical events and pop culture knowledge.
Whether through volunteering or trivia, there are numerous opportunities for Clouderans to engage and learn about the experiences of their peers. Each activity this month will help attendees appreciate the long, rich, and complex history that brought us here, and better understand the unique perspectives that shape the Latino and Hispanic experience around the world.
Reflections on a month of learning and growth
This month is so important to help generate a real and meaningful level of engagement and connection with Clouderans. As we participate in each of these events, it’s important to take a step back and appreciate the many contributions Hispanics and Latinos have made to the world, while also recognizing that the concept of Hispanic or Latino is not a monolith. There are so many amazing cultures and communities that fall under those labels and it’s important to highlight and celebrate the unique aspects of each.
Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1988. Since then, it has evolved from a week-long event to a month-long celebration of its own. This evolution is a testament to the profound impact of Hispanic and Latino culture and history in the U.S. As we approach the final weeks of celebration, it is gratifying to see how much everyone has been involved in creating a warm and welcoming environment for team members to connect and showcase the things that make them unique.
